Welcome to Romaine Dennistoun's site.

Let me show you some of my wildlife (and other animal) drawings. All my work is drawn directly from my subject, whether it is furred or feathered!

My work, my inspiration

Animals are seldom still, so I use pen and ink for speed, but charcoal is useful for large or sleeping subjects.

I work slowly at first, searching for that connection between animal, eye and hand. As the repeated efforts start to flow, I begin to ask myself questions: does it move laterally or diagonally, how far down the leg is the knee or hock, what angle is the head set on the neck, and so on.

I am constantly chasing the line which determines the characteristics of my subject and each time I see something fresh and intriguing to draw.

How I work...

The first essential is my pleasure in observation.

When I go to a Zoo or Wildlife Park, I spend some time looking around to see which of the personalities catch my eye. It might be a classical outline, the toss of a head, some unusual pose or movement, or maybe just a ‘look’.
